Warriors respond to Kristaps Porzingis trade report

The Warriors issued a statement Wednesday after a report that they are exploring trades involving Kristaps Porzingis as he considers his basketball future.

The team declined to discuss those matters but said it doesn’t expect the veteran center to rejoin the group soon.

“In response to today’s media report regarding Kristaps Porzingis, we are not going to comment on trade speculation or reports regarding his health-related matter or future,” the Warriors said. “As noted last week, conversations between the Warriors, Kristaps and his representatives will remain private.”

“We are not anticipating Kristaps being around the team in the immediate future. We’ll provide additional updates when available and appropriate.”

The statement followed ESPN’s Shams Charania’s report, covered earlier by Hoops Wire, that Porzingis is dealing with recurring symptoms of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, commonly known as POTS.

According to Charania, Porzingis is seriously considering his future in basketball, with stepping away permanently a possibility if his recovery doesn’t improve.

Golden State has also begun exploring trade options, per the ESPN report. Porzingis is owed $20 million this season, with only a small partial guarantee next year, giving the Warriors a contract they could potentially package with other assets.

Coach Steve Kerr has emphasized supporting Porzingis while preparing the available players for the season. The Warriors open Wednesday against the Lakers with Draymond Green and Al Horford among their options at center.
