Some Knicks fans bought championship shirts. Vance and Yvonne Bradford went with something their son will be explaining for the rest of his life.
Meet Knickson Fyve. Yes, as in “Knicks in five,” the chant that followed New York’s first NBA championship in more than 50 years. Knickson is pronounced “Nixon,” and his parents didn’t arrive at the name by accident.
“We opened our windows after the Knicks won and we heard the chants: ‘Knicks in five! Knicks in five!’ And that kind of sat with us,” Vance told J.J. Post of ESPN.
Yvonne suggested Knickson the following morning. At first, the Brooklyn couple planned to pair it with a more conventional middle name. Then she reconsidered.
“Two days later my wife was like, ‘Let’s go full force with this. Let’s call him Knickson Fyve,’” Vance said.
He took a “split second” to make sure she was serious, then agreed quickly “so she can’t take it back.”
That’s commitment. Also, probably a pretty good indication of which team the kid will be encouraged to follow.
For the Bradfords, the name represents more than five basketball games. Both are native Brooklynites, and Vance said the championship changed the mood of the city.
“It looks good, and everyone says, ‘Oh we were cheering,’ but I mean [it] seriously changed the behavior of the city in the most positive way,” he said.
ESPN also cited a report that 32 New York City babies were named Jalen between March and early October, up from 15 during the same period last year.
So Knickson may eventually have some classmates named after the champs. His parents just made sure nobody has to ask which season inspired them.
