Cavs likely getting Meleek Thomas back, and bench could use him

The Cavaliers appear close to getting their rookie spark back. With Jaylon Tyson unavailable, the timing would help.

Meleek Thomas has been upgraded to probable for Saturday’s visit to the Bucks after missing Thursday’s loss in Atlanta with right foot soreness. Tyson is out with a right ankle sprain. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern.

Thomas has played just two NBA games, but he’s given the Cavs a reason to want to see more. He scored 16 points in his debut against Minnesota, then added 10 against Washington. The Cavs won both.

It hasn’t just been the shooting, although making 10 of your first 17 shots certainly helps. Thomas has given the second unit some energy and another guard willing to attack, taking a little of the burden off Donovan Mitchell and James Harden.

“The vets love him,” coach Kenny Atkinson said after Thomas’ debut. “They love him because he can play. But they love him because he listens, he’s inquisitive. … He gets it, he’s smart, he’s asking questions. … Rare, he’s rare.”

Mitchell even presented Thomas with the game ball after the overtime win over the Timberwolves.

None of that means the Cavs need Thomas to rescue them every night. He’s a rookie, and there will be nights when the shots don’t fall. But Atkinson has already seen enough to envision a regular role.

“Wait until he gets more comfortable in the league,” Atkinson said after the Washington game. “He’s going to [be] an important part of this [team].”

Tyrese Proctor supplied seven points and six rebounds with Thomas out against Atlanta. Tyson’s absence should also create more opportunity for Mario Hezonja, who continues to earn Atkinson’s trust.

Nae’Qwan Tomlin remains out with a low back stress reaction. The Cavs enter at 3-2 and are seeking their first road win against the 1-4 Bucks.
