The Raptors don’t need to make a major roster decision because they split their first eight games. RJ Barrett’s contract, however, gives them something to think about beyond the standings.
Barrett is in the final season of his deal, carrying a roughly $29 million cap hit before unrestricted free agency. He’s also giving Toronto production it would have to replace if it moved him.
Through eight games, Barrett is averaging 20.9 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists while shooting 48.1% from the field.
That’s the complication outlined by Ethen Hutton of Sports Illustrated, who examined whether the Raptors could use Barrett in a trade to address other needs, particularly perimeter shooting.
It’s a roster-building question, rather than a report that Toronto has decided to shop him. But it’s a fair one.
The Raptors brought in Kawhi Leonard with bigger goals than hovering around .500. With Leonard sidelined, Barrett has helped carry the offense alongside Scottie Barnes. Moving him would require confidence that the return improves the team enough to justify losing that contribution.
Finding a better fit sounds easy. Finding one who can also replace 21 points a night is a little more involved.
Barrett, 26, also showed what he could provide during last season’s seven-game playoff loss to the Cavaliers, averaging 24.1 points and 4.0 assists. That gives Toronto a reason to consider keeping him beyond this season.
The decision ultimately comes down to his price, his fit with a healthy roster and what alternatives are actually available.
A 4-4 start won’t answer those questions. Barrett’s approaching free agency does mean the Raptors can’t put them off indefinitely.
