Cavaliers small forward Dylan Windler has a hamstring injury and is “progressing day by day,” a league source told Hoops Wire on Monday.
Windler officially has been listed as out with a right ankle sprain, so the hamstring issue appears to be in addition to that. It was not made clear if the ankle is still bothering him.
Either way, it’s been an unfortunate case of more of the same for Windler, who has struggled to stay on the court and has yet to appear in a game this season. He missed all of his rookie year and has played just 81 of a possible 294 games since being selected with the No. 26 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.
Windler, 26, is 6-foot-6 and did manage to appear in 50 games last season, averaging 2.2 points on 38 percent shooting. He averaged 5.2 points on 44 percent from the field, including 34 percent on 3-pointers, in 2020-21 when he played 50 games.
For now, he remains out indefinitely. A healthy Windler would theoretically add some depth and perimeter shooting to the small forward spot, but again, it remains to be seen if that becomes a possibility.
The Cavs (29-19) begin a three-game trip against the Knicks on Tuesday. They then face the Rockets on Thursday and the Thunder on Friday.
