The Heat have agreed to a one-year contract with Victor Oladipo, retaining the veteran shooting guard in what has become an accomplished backcourt, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.Oladipo’s deal will allow him to test free agency again in 2022 and give him the chance to “sign a big contract once he’s fully healthy,” Charania wrote. Miami will still retain his Bird Rights.
Oladipo, 29, appeared in just four games with the Heat following a late-season trade with the Rockets. Before that, he was traded by the Pacers to Houston as part of the major deal that landed James Harden with the Nets.
A former All-Star, Oladipo hasn’t been quite the same since suffering a leg injury in early 2019, though he still has shown flashes of what made him the face of the Pacers for two-plus seasons.
He averaged 19.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists in a total of 33 games last year.
Re-signing Oladipo clearly became a priority for the Heat after losing guard Kendrick Nunn , who signed with the Lakers.
Now, Oladipo will join Kyle Lowry and Tyler Herro as main players in the Miami backcourt — with newcomer P.J. Tucker and mainstays Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo also serving as reasons for the Heat to believe in good things.
