Cavs Have Interest in Re-Signing Caris LeVert

Caris LeVert has been the best small forward on the Cavaliers’ roster in the post-All-Star stretch of the season, and that’s not really up for debate.

LeVert has been doing his damage off the bench, averaging 14.5 points, 3.9 assists and shooting a sizzling 48 percent on 3-pointers over the last 10 games. Basically, he is raising his game as the Cavs aim to win their first playoff series without LeBron James in 30 years.

So suddenly, LeVert’s impending free agency — which he’s eligible for this summer — is looming large. And it is something that the Cavs realize is on their offseason to-do list. They will have a decision to make.

Per Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, the Cavs are indeed interested in retaining LeVert on a multiyear deal. But it has to be within reason. In other words, the dollars have to make sense.

Basically, LeVert appears to be a shoe-in to return, but these things are never settled until the contract is signed. It would be considerably more surprising if the Cavs opted to let him walk in free agency.

They had opportunities to move him at the February trade deadline and opted to hang onto him instead.

As Fedor wrote, the fact Cleveland controls LeVert’s Bird rights “allows them to go over the cap to re-sign him.”

With the way LeVert is playing, the bottom line is the Cavs would be hard-pressed to replace him at the same rate. You need veteran role players and lately, LeVert has been playing that role well.
