Longtime NBA coach and current University of Memphis assistant Larry Brown has made a full recovery after contracting the delta variant of COVID-19, as relayed by Claire Kuwana of the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Brown, 80, contracted the virus while on a scouting trip to South Carolina with Tigers head coach Penny Hardaway. The purpose of the trip was to watch recent Memphis signee Jalen Duran.
“Unfortunately I got sick, right after it was over, I got that delta variant, and I was kind of out for about 10 to 12 days, but I’m all good now and you know anxious to get back,” Brown said on the Jason and John Show on 92.9 FM ESPN, via Kuwana.
Brown said he has been vaccinated.
As for Duran, Brown compared him to a modern version of Shawn Kemp — adding that Duran turned down an opportunity to play for the G League Ignite to join the Tigers.
“When you’re able to compete against Miami and Kentucky for a kid, it tells you what they think of Penny, of his program and what he’s trying to build,” Brown said.
Brown has been a coaching vagabond of sorts, coaching everywhere from college to multiple stops in the NBA. The list includes UCLA, Kansas and SMU, as well as the Nuggets, Nets, Spurs, Clippers, Pacers, 76ers, Knicks and Bobcats (currently the Hornets). He also led the Pistons to the NBA title in 2014.
