Timberwolves head of basketball operations Tim Connelly has been linked to the Wizards’ GM vacancy but made it sound as if he’s staying right where he is.
“I’m pretty committed to the Minnesota Timberwolves right now, just worried about how we can get out of the first round,” Connelly said, via Chris Hine of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “It’s been a long, long time since we got out of the first round.
“So (coach Chris Finch) and I are pretty excited to meet with the guys and are really excited about the foundation pieces we have here. Just keep building.”
Connelly came over from the Nuggets at the end of last season and his first major move was to orchestrate the trade for center Rudy Gobert with the Jazz. After center/forward Karl-Anthony Towns missed 52 games with a calf injury, it’s still hard to know if the Gobert will pay off.
But it appears Connelly — a Baltimore native who attended Catholic University in D.C. — intends to stick with Minnesota to find out.
Meanwhile, the Wizards are determined to bring in someone from outside the organization to replace GM Tommy Sheppard, fired earlier this month.
The job of head coach Wes Unseld Jr. is said to be safe for next season regardless of who the Wizards hire to head basketball operations.
