Former NBA shooting guard and current Warriors VP of basketball operations Mike Dunleavy Jr. may be the frontrunner to replace outgoing president of basketball operations/GM Bob Myers, as relayed by Anthony Slater and Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Myers is leaving his post after 11 seasons as the architect of Golden State’s roster. The Warriors have won four championships in that span, behind the likes of star guards Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, forward Draymond Green and coach Steve Kerr — hired by Myers.
Dunleavy, 42, has been with the Warriors’ front office since 2018, when he was hired as a scout upon retiring as a player. He was promoted to his current position before the 2021-22 season.
Per Slater and Charania, Dunleavy is viewed as a “natural successor” to Myers.
As a player, Dunleavy’s NBA career began with the Warriors, who selected him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2002 draft. During his 17-year career, he also spent time with the Pacers, Bulls, Bucks, Cavaliers and Hawks.
His father, Mike Dunleavy Sr., is a former NBA player and coach, and his brother, James Dunleavy, is an NBA player agent.
Myers is expected to take at least next season off, then decide on his future in the league after that.
