The Grizzlies are trading center Juan Hernangomez to the Celtics in exchange for guards Kris Dunn and Carsen Edwards, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Memphis will also receive a 2026 second-round pick as part of the deal, Wojnarowski reported.
Hernangomez, 25, is 6-foot-9 and was acquired by the Grizzlies last month as part of the Patrick Beverley trade with the Timberwolves. Hernangomez averaged 7.2 points and 3.9 rebounds in 52 games last season, a drop-off from the previous year.
Still, as Wojnarowski noted, he “gives the Celtics another potential floor-spacer in a bench role.”
But for Boston, that may not be the only be benefit to moving Dunn and Edwards.
“By trading two players for one, the Celtics will clear a minor roster crunch,” wrote Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors. “The team had been carrying 16 players, including 15 on fully guaranteed deals. This move will give the team the flexibility to keep Jabari Parker on its regular-season roster or leave its 15th spot open to start the season.”
Meanwhile, Memphis now has a full training camp roster of 20 players, with 18 on standard deals. So more moves could potentially be on the way.
“As with many of the minor deals the Grizzlies have made this summer – this is the team’s sixth trade of the offseason – the primary impetus for the move does not seem to be the players involved,” wrote Chris Herrington of the Daily Memphian.
Dunn, 27, is 6-3 and injuries limited him to four games with the Hawks last season. He was traded from the Hawks to the Celtics less than a month ago, so he can’t be moved again until Sept. 15, when the Grizzlies-Celtics deal can be finalized, per Wojnarowski.
Edwards, 23, is 5-11 and appeared in 31 games last season, averaging 4.0 points on 42 percent shooting.
This marked the Grizzlies’ sixth trade of the offseason.
“Among the five players currently on the roster as a result of the team’s recent spate of trades, Jarrett Culver seems the only one nearly certain to make the final cut,” Herrington noted.
