No. 1 overall draft pick and Spurs center Victor Wembanyama will be held out for the remainder of the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, per Mike Finger of the San Antonio Express-News.
Wembanyama appeared in two games in Vegas, and per Finger, the plan all along was for him to play just two games “after a busy summer.” Wembanyama just recently finished play with the Metropolitans 92 in the French league.
He struggled to 2-of-13 shooting in his first game, scoring just nine points in a 76-68 win over no. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller and the Hornets.
But he bounced back in a major way in his second game, an 85-80 loss to the Trail Blazers, erupting for 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting, with 12 rebounds, three blocks and a steal in 27 minutes.
“It was just me getting comfortable with myself, my body and the court because before today I had like two practices and one game,” he said after the loss, via Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News. “I was just getting going.”
The Spurs’ next summer game is Tuesday vs. the Wizards, followed by a game Friday against the Pistons.
Can report Victor Wembanyama is now 100% finished with summer league, per the Spurs.
All along, two games was the plan. Spurs wanted him to get a taste of the NBA, and he got it. Team saw what it wanted to see, now giving him a break after a busy 12 months.
