The Mavericks don’t intend to bring back center/forward Christian Wood but they could utilize him to add another key player.
Per Marc Stein of The Stein Line, the Mavs have not ruled out the idea of a sign-and-trade scenario centered on Wood.
But such a deal would not be easy, given Dallas’ salary-cap restraints.
“The issue for the Mavericks: They are already hard-capped and only $9 million and change away from hitting the NBA’s first luxury-tax apron, so it has been stressed to me that they would have to really like the player they receive in return to partake in such a deal,” Stein wrote.
The Cavaliers and Lakers are among the teams that have been linked to Wood, an unrestricted free agent.
Wood, 27, had a pretty nice run in his lone season with the Mavericks, averaging 16.6 points and 7.3 rebounds in 67 games, shooting 52 percent from the field and 38 percent on 3-pointers. The fact the Mavs don’t want him back and that he is still available has intrigued those around the NBA.
Along with the Mavericks, Wood has spent time with the Rockets, Pistons, Pelicans, Bucks, Hornets and 76ers since entering the league in 2015.
We've already had a couple (small) Sunday trades … so here's my latest around-the-league Sunday notes filled with NBA trade and free agency talk: https://t.co/FXO4Z6xtQX
