Rockets Waive Khyri Thomas As Part Of Sekou Doumbouya Trade

The Rockets have officially waived shooting guard Khyri Thomas, the team announced in a press release.

The move was part of Tuesday’s trade with the Nets in which the Rockets acquired forward Sekou Doumbouya. While they also intend to waive Doumbouya, they needed to cut someone else to make room on the training camp roster to complete the deal.

Thomas, 25, is 6-foot-3 and spent his first two seasons with the Pistons after going undrafted out of Creighton in 2018. He signed a 10-day contract with the Rockets in May, then played well and signed a multiyear deal.

The Nets sent Doumbouya and a 2024 second-round pick to the Rockets in exchange for $110,000. Brooklyn also traded for Pacers guard Edmond Sumner, out for the year with an Achilles injury. He too will be waived.

“Both of these transactions are essentially salary dumps,” wrote Alex Kirschenbaum of Hoops Rumors. “The Nets and Pacers are each attaching a second-round pick in order to avoid paying a player’s guaranteed salary. Both the Rockets and Nets have trade exceptions that will enable them to take on a new player without sending one out in a deal.”
