The Hornets have officially waived guard/forward LiAngelo Ball, the team announced in a release.
This move was to be expected, as the Hornets signed Ball earlier this week with an eye on retaining his rights for the Greensboro Swarm, their affiliate in the G League.
Ball is the younger brother of Bulls point guard Lonzo Ball and the older brother of LaMelo Ball.
LiAngelo Ball averaged 9.6 points and 2.0 rebounds in five games with the Hornets at the Las Vegas Summer League, but was not included on the team’s 20-man training camp roster.
“LiAngelo did a good job in summer league, I can say that,” Hornets coach James Borrego told reporters. “As a basketball coach, I think he did a heck of a job in the time we had him there. What happens now in the future with LiAngelo, I don’t have that answer; I’ll leave that to (general manager) Mitch (Kupchak) to discuss and describe as we go. I like our roster. We have a full 20-man roster ready to go.”
Ball attended training camp with the Pistons in 2020, but waived before the start of the season.
“I’m comfortable with LiAngelo and how he played,” Borrego said. “I thought he got better during that period but we have to make certain decisions here, and I’m comfortable with where we’re at.”
The Hornets’ roster currently stands at 18.
Per the team release:
Ball appeared in five games with the Hornets at the 2021 MGM Resorts Summer League in Las Vegas where he averaged 9.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 17.4 minutes per game. He played one season professionally overseas during the 2017-18 season, posting averages of 12.6 points and 2.9 rebounds in 21.6 minutes per game in 14 games with BC Prienai.
