Streaming giant Amazon is looking to become a player in the NBA playoffs. Or at least stream some playoff games for the 2024-25 season, as relayed by Ben Axelrod of Awful Announcing.
Amazon Global Head of Sports Jay Marine told Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand and the New York Post’s Andrew Marchand on their podcast that the company would like to stream more than just regular-season games.
“Would something like the playoffs be an important part of [our bid]? Yes, I think that’s fair to say,” Marine said on the podcast, via Ourand.
Amazon is among multiple companies expected to make a bid on NBA broadcasting and streaming rights, along with the likes of Apple, NBC and Netflix. ESPN/ABC and TNT currently own the league’s broadcast rights and will undoubtedly be in the mix, if not the frontrunners.
But Amazon Prime just recently picked up Thursday Night Football from the NFL and seemingly intends to go all in on the NBA.
“What fits is that it is one of the biggest leagues in the world and people care about it,” Marine said, via Ourand. “At the end of the day, do Prime members care about it? Is it important to their life? And as a result, can it be meaningful in terms of the value it adds to Prime members and the Prime program? And I think with the NBA, it is true on all of those fronts.”
