The NBA is always aiming to follow in the footsteps of the wildly successful NFL — or at least take things from pro football that work and apply it to its own industry.
One of those things that really works is the NFL Draft, a three-day event featuring seven rounds. The NBA only has two rounds, historically held on the same night. It used to be Wednesdays. Now it’s Thursdays.
Perhaps soon it can be both.
According to NBA commissioner Adam Silver, the league is looking into making its draft a two-night event, and as soon as next summer.
“The talent goes so deep now and the interest is so great (that), to me, both rounds deserve prime time,” Silver told SiriusXM NBA Radio. “… To me it essentially seems like a no-brainer. … I’m hoping to get there, actually, for this season, for this June, and move the second round to its own night.”
Silver did not indicate if teams would have more time to make a pick in the second round if it moves to a second night. Currently, they are granted just two minutes (as opposed to five in the first).
Website owners such as myself are totally in favor of a two-night draft, of course. It would offer additional content and another main event for the league, and an event that fans love to follow.
If all of this does take place, I could see the first round being held on TNT and the second on another network — perhaps such as NBA TV. But that’s nothing official, just having some fun while guessing.
And while the league is at it, they should throw in a third round, just like the old days, just for the sake of TV. Plus, lots of players who never get drafted go on to make a name for themselves via rookie free agency.
