NFL won’t compete with NBA next Christmas, NFL suggests

When it comes to pro sports being played and televised on Christmas Day, the world used to belong to the NBA.Luka Doncic drives past LeBron James

More recently, the NFL has moved in, and when it comes to the NFL vs. anybody, the NFL always wins. For the second straight year, the NBA will be forced to go head-to-head with football on Christmas Day.

That does nothing for NBA ratings — and we won’t be seeing any of those releases from the league about its viewership on Christmas Day, because the NFL will bury it in head-to-head nationally televised games.

But the NBA may again own Christmas Day next year, as NFL executive VP of media distribution Hans Schroeder told Andrew Beaton of the Wall Street Journal that pro football won’t stage games when Christmas lands on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Well, next year, Christmas is on a Wednesday, as pointed out by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

That said, if Christmas turns out to be a huge money-maker for the NFL (and what isn’t), then you can be sure it will at least contemplate Wednesday games next year.

“I don’t believe it. That’s not to say I think Hans is being untruthful. I believe he’s telling the truth as the truth currently is,” Florio wrote of the NFL skipping Christmas next year. “I just don’t believe the truth will remain true. With Christmas 2024 landing on a Wednesday, I believe the league will indeed play games that day.”

For now, though, the NBA will have next Christmas all to itself again. We shall see if that actually remains the case.
