Sixers’ Joel Embiid needs knee procedure, likely to miss extended time

The news about Joel Embiid‘s left knee just keeps getting worse.Joel Embiid

Now, the Philadelphia 76ers center and reigning NBA MVP is expected to miss extended time after it was learned he will undergo a procedure to repair a meniscus injury, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Embiid suffered the injury during the fourth quarter of last week’s road loss to the Golden State Warriors. The Sixers (30-18) have dropped to fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Also, Embiid was voted as an East starter for the All-Star Game on Feb. 18 in Indianapolis. That too is likely now a no-go.

Along with that, Embiid will be ineligible to repeat as MVP, as the new collective bargaining agreement states players must appear in at least 65 games to receive postseason awards. Embiid won’t hit the mark, as he’s already missed 14.

Embiid is averaging an NBA-best 35.3 points, as well as 11.3 rebounds, a career-high 5.7 assists and 1.8 blocks.
