Warriors Sign Steve Kerr To 2-Year, $35 Million Extension

The Golden State Warriors have signed head coach Steve Kerr to a two-year, $35 million extension, making Kerr the highest-paid coach in NBA history.

Kerr joined the Warriors in 2014. Since then, Golden State has played in six NBA Finals and won four championships. 

Kerr led the Warriors to 73 wins during the 2015-16 regular season, the most in NBA history. However, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat Golden State in the 2016 Finals, becoming the first team ever to erase a 3-1 series deficit in the Finals. 

Kerr’s deal was set to expire at the end of this season. His $17.5 million-per-season extension takes him through the 2025-26 season. The extension aligns him with the two years left on two-time MVP Stephen Curry‘s contract.

After the Warriors beat the Charlotte Hornets last night (2/23), Draymond Green talked about Kerr’s new deal. 

“I think it’s incredible,” Green said. “Wouldn’t want to finish my time here with any other coach. What he’s meant to this franchise … the winning ways that he brought here, you can’t replace that. … He got what he deserved.”

All signs point toward Green, Curry and Klay Thompson spending their entire careers with the Warriors and Kerr coaching them. Green said he never had any concerns about Kerr receiving a new deal since he trusted Golden State owner Joe Lacob to make the right move. 

“No because I know Joe is going to do the right thing,” Green said of Lacob. “He’s done nothing but build that trust with us that he’s going to do the right thing and take care of those who take care of this organization.”

The Warriors are 29-26 this season. They are in 10th place in the Western Conference standings. If the season ended today, Kerr’s group would be in the play-in tournament.
