The Cavaliers have done their big work this offseason, hiring a coach in Kenny Atkinson and signing star guard Donovan Mitchell to a contract extension. But there is still some work to be done.
That includes a contract extension for power forward Evan Mobley and figuring out what to do with wing Isaac Okoro. I discuss that and a whole lot more, including the NBA Las Vegas Summer League and Bronny James, in the latest Hoops Wire Live on 330 to Go. Check it out here on YouTube or directly below.
Along with those things, of course, the Cavaliers have to check out their summer team — which got off to a horrible start, dropping a 106-79 decision to the Orlando Magic. Granted, summer league doesn’t matter (and yes, I said the same thing when the Cavs won the Las Vegas title last season), but you’d still like to give a better showing.
I thought rookie Jaylon Tyson looked pretty good once he got settled down, though the turnovers (four) were a little high. But no big deal. It was his first effort in a quasi-NBA uniform.
Tyson, selected with the No. 20 overall pick, finished with 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting with eight boards.
Second-year forward Emoni Bates scored 20, but at times forced the issue. That may have had more to do with the game being out of reach. Basically, it’s hard to make a judgment when the game isn’t close. When it comes to summer league, we can wait until the end to assess who may help out the Cavs next season.
As my friend Jackson Flickinger of Fear The Sword wrote: “This was an uncompetitive performance. It’s dangerous to make too many sweeping declarations about individual players in an exhibition that gets this lopsided this quickly.”
So, yeah. Let’s just wait and see. Until then, enjoy the show. Again, if you have any trouble viewing it here, you can always just check it out on the 330 to Go YouTube page.
