Longtime LeBron James friend and business partner Maverick Carter said that James does indeed want to own an NBA team someday. But that will have to wait.
“LeBron is dead set on owning an NBA team. But he’s still playing and I have no idea how much longer he’s gonna play,” Carter said during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. “I would’ve thought that he would be done a few years ago but he’s out there with the beard now with the grey still letting the young guys know that grandpops is out here still ballin’.”
James turns 40 this season and the Los Angeles Lakers, as constructed, don’t really appear to be headed anywhere special. So you do have to wonder how much longer James will keep going. Insiders have said he wanted to hang on long enough to play with son Bronny James — something that will take place this season.
But age has hardly slowed James the dad.
As for team ownership, James has been linked to a potential expansion team in Las Vegas. Interestingly expansion could be on the docket for the NBA after reaching a new media rights deal. At least, that’s what NBA commissioner Adam Silver has suggested in the past.
Speculation has Las Vegas and Seattle, once home of the SuperSonics, as the NBA’s next two likeliest destinations.
Also, expansion ownership could become a possibility right about the time James is set to retire (say, in the next two or three years). So, yes, perhaps it will all work out for James and his group to own a team.
