The Denver Nuggets and standout guard Jamal Murray have agreed to a four-year maximum contract extension, agents Jeff Schwartz and Mike George told Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
The deal, which kicks in at the start of the 2025-26 season, will result in Murray potentially earning $244 million over the next five years.
Murray will make $36 million next season in the final year of his contract. He signed a five-year, $195 million deal with the Nuggets in 2019.
One of the top guards in the NBA, Murray averaged 21.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.7 blocks last season while shooting 48.1% from the field, 42.5% from beyond the arc and 85.3% from the free-throw line.
The Nuggets went 57-25 in 2023-24 and beat the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the playoffs in five games — before losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round in seven games.
Denver won the 2023 title against the Miami Heat in five games.
Murray was the seventh overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft out of Kentucky. He carries career averages of 17.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.3 blocks.
He is indeed a cornerstone of the franchise, considered the Nuggets’ second-best player behind center Nikola Jokic.
Murray was indeed expected to receive an extension after he finished playing for Team Canada at the Paris Olympics, as first reported by Bennett Durando of the Denver Post.
“With one year remaining on his current contract, Nuggets guard Jamal Murray is eligible for up to a four-year, $208.5 million extension this summer, and The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported in June that the two sides are expected to agree to a max deal this offseason,” Durando wrote. “So why hasn’t that extension been signed yet? Extension talks are temporarily on the back-burner right now, but Murray and the Nuggets will likely come to an agreement after the Olympics are done, according to a league source.”
