Cavs Waive Two Players

The Cavaliers have waived forwards Gabe Osabuohien and Nae’Qwan Tomlin shortly after signing both players to Exhibit 10 contracts, per the NBA transactions log.Gabe Osabuohien, Cleveland Charge, Cavaliers, NBA

Osabuohien, 25, is 6-foot-8 and went undrafted out of West Virginia in 2022 (after a couple of years at Arkansas). He doesn’t have any NBA experience but did play for the Cleveland Charge of the G League from 2022-24, as well as for the Calgary Surge of the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

He appeared in 37 games with the Charge, averaging 2.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists in limited action. At the end of the season, Osabuohien received the Jason Collier Sportsmanship Award for his character on the court and in the community.

Osabuohien was involved in a car accident in June 2023 in which he suffered some broken ribs and a broken nose. Thankfully, he has made a full recovery.

Tomlin is also 6-8 and went undrafted out of Memphis this past June. He didn’t start playing basketball until high school and is viewed as an intriguing long-term prospect.

According to the official NBA Draft guide: “If his 3-ball becomes potent and he develops more as a playmaker, he could begin to look like a smaller Karl-Anthony Towns. If the shot lacks consistency, Tomlin could mold into someone like Aaron Gordon or Tari Eason — an energy forward who plays with quickness and physicality.”

An Exhibit 10 contract is a non-guaranteed minimum-salary deal. It doesn’t count toward a team’s cap unless the player makes the final roster. It also can be converted to a two-way deal before the season begins or mean guaranteed money if a player is waived and then stays on the G League club for at least 60 days.

In other words, both Osabuohien and Tomlin are likely headed to the Charge.

The Cavaliers open training camp on Tuesday in Florida, before opening the preseason vs. the Bulls on Oct. 8 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
