The Warriors are signing free agent forward Kevin Knox to a one-year contract, per Shams Charania of The Athletic. The deal appears to be non-guaranteed, as Knox is expected to compete for a spot on the standard roster.
Knox, 25, is 6-7 and has become sort of a journeyman since the Knicks selected him with the No. 9 overall pick back in the 2018 NBA Draft. He finished last season with the Pistons, though was sent to the Jazz in a February trade. He was waived shortly thereafter and became an unrestricted free agent.
Along with the Knicks and Pistons, Knox has spent time with the Hawks and Trail Blazers. He averaged a career-high 12.8 points as a rookie in New York but hasn’t hit double figures since. In 31 games with Detroit last season, he averaged 7.2 points and 2.4 rebounds, shooting 46.2% from the field and 33.0% on 3-pointers.
The Warriors are coming off a season in which they failed to make the playoffs after being eliminated from the play-in tournament by the Kings. They lost shooting guard Klay Thompson to the Mavericks, but added guards Buddy Hield and De’Anthony Melton, as well as forward Kyle Anderson.
Knox is undoubtedly an intriguing prospect but many across the NBA feel he may have hit his ceiling. His struggles from beyond the arc may not make him a fit with Golden State, either.
No matter, the Warriors are likely a lot of other teams and decided Knox is worthy of an audition. They open training camp on Tuesday.
