The Magic have signed center Wendell Carter Jr. to a contract extension, according to a team press release.
Per Shams Charania of ESPN, the deal is for three years and $58.7 million. As an aside, this news serves as Charania’s first scoop since replacing Adrian Wojnarowski as ESPN’s top insider.
Anyway, Carter is entering his third year of a four-year, $50MM contract that was frontloaded,” wrote Dana Gauruder of Hoops Rumors. “The new deal will keep him under contract through the 2028/29 season.”
Carter is 6-foot-10 and appeared in 55 games last season, averaging 11.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists, while shooting 52.5% from the floor and 37.4% on 3-pointers.
The Magic finished with the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference, falling to the Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs in seven games.
“Carter Jr. scored in double figures 28 times and 20+ points three times, including a season-high 25 points on Jan. 19 vs. Philadelphia,” the Magic press release read. “He had 10+ rebounds 10 times and recorded nine double-doubles. Carter Jr. also played in seven playoff games (five starts), averaging 7.6 ppg., 6.3 rpg. and 1.3 apg. in 26,4 minpg.
“Originally selected in the first round (seventh overall) of the 2018 NBA Draft by Chicago, Carter Jr. has appeared in 315 career NBA regular season games (294 starts) with Chicago and Orlando, averaging 12.5 points., 8.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists, shooting .517 (1,497-2,893) from the floor. He was acquired by the Magic from Chicago, along with Otto Porter Jr. and two future first-round draft picks, in exchange for Al-Farouq Aminu and Nikola Vucevic on Mar. 25, 2021.”
