Grizzlies Sign Free Agent Guard

The Grizzlies have signed guard David Johnson, a former No. 47 overall NBA draft pick, the team announced in a press release.David Johnson, Memphis Hustle, Grizzlies, NBA

Memphis had an opening on its 21-man preseason roster, so can fill out its G League roster by signing Johnson to an Exhibit 10 deal for training camp.

Johnson, 23, is 6-foot-4 and was selected with the No. 47 pick out of Louisville in 2021. He has appeared in just two NBA games, both with the Raptors as a rookie, and has spent the majority of his pro career in the G League — first with Raptors 905, and then last season with the Memphis Hustle.

His year with the Hustle was his best, as Johnson averaged 17.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.8 assists in 24 games. He knocked down 35.4% of his 3-pointers in the process.

Along with that, Johnson played for Team USA in the 3×3 U23 World Cup in September, becoming one of the leading scorers in the FIBA tournament. (The U.S. lost to Germany in the gold medal game.)

An Exhibit 10 contract is a non-guaranteed minimum-salary deal. It doesn’t count toward a team’s cap unless the player makes the final roster. It also can be converted to a two-way deal before the season begins or mean guaranteed money if a player is waived and then stays on the G League club for at least 60 days.
