The Pelicans are taking a chance on some untapped potential, claiming swingman Brandon Boston Jr. off waivers, as reported by NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Boston, who’s spent the last three seasons with the Clippers, never quite broke through in LA, but he’s shown glimpses of what he can do.
Averaging 6.2 points in 12.9 minutes per game over his career, Boston’s a guy who can score in bunches, though his role has been limited to short bursts off the bench. He is getting a two-way deal from New Orleans.
The Clippers decided not to extend a qualifying offer this summer, and after a quick stop in San Antonio, Boston found himself waived again over the weekend. But here’s where things get interesting: the Pelicans didn’t waste any time, converting his Exhibit 10 deal into a two-way contract, per Shams Charania of ESPN.
New Orleans had an open two-way slot after waiving Malcolm Hill earlier in the day, and they’re now rolling into the season with Boston joining Jamal Cain and Trey Jemison on two-way deals. The Pelicans will have 14 standard contracts filled, leaving some room for flexibility as they head into the season.
Boston might not have set the league on fire just yet, but let’s not forget, this is a 6-foot-7 wing with length and scoring ability — a former top recruit with plenty of potential.
In New Orleans, where injuries always seem to open up opportunities, Boston could find himself with a real chance to contribute. At the very least, he adds some intriguing depth to a Pelicans team that’s always looking for the next piece to help push them over the top.
