James Harden wanted to play for the 76ers when he was traded by the Rockets in January 2021, but was sent to the Nets instead.
Now, thanks to last week’s blockbuster Ben Simmons deal, Harden received his wish.
“Originally, when I was going through everything I was going through in Houston, Philly was my first choice,” Harden said at his introductory press conference. “It just didn’t happen. Details, I don’t really want to get into the Brooklyn situation. I knew for a very long time this was a perfect fit.”
Harden has reunited with 76ers head of basketball operations Daryl Morey, the ex-Rockets GM when Harden was in Houston. Harden is also tight with one of the Sixers’ co-owners.
He never really was a fit next to Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in Brooklyn, though Harden seemed to keep that to himself. Now, he gets a shot with All-Star center Joel Embiid and coach Doc Rivers. And is exactly where he says he wants to be.
“From top to bottom, it made sense. I’m just happy and blessed that I’m here,” Harden said. “I’m excited for the perfect opportunity.”
