NBA Trade Restrictions Overview

Signing Restrictions (SR):
Most players who signed contracts during the offseason have a trade restriction starting on December 15th. Players who signed with their own team using Bird or Early Bird rights, and whose contract is 120% greater than the previous season’s salary, are restricted until January 15th. Additionally, players like the Memphis Grizzlies’ Scotty Pippen Jr., who signed after September 15, are restricted for three months from their signing date.
Six-Month Trade Restriction:
There is a group of players, including the Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid, whose contracts were extended or renegotiated with terms that exceed three seasons and a salary increase of more than 5%. These players are restricted from being traded for six months from the contract execution date.
Super Max (Designated Veteran Player Extension):
Players like Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics, who signed a Designated Veteran Player Extension (also known as the super max), cannot be traded until July.
One-Year Bird Rights (1YB):
This restriction applies to players who sign a one-year contract and will acquire Bird rights with their current team when they become a free agent. While they can still be traded, they must consent to the trade. If they do, their Bird rights do not transfer to the new team. The 2023 CBA introduced a clause allowing players to waive the one-year Bird restriction. Thomas Bryant and Mo Wagner are examples of players who waived it.
Aggregate Restriction (AR):
When a player is acquired via trade (excluding those using cap space), they cannot be traded alongside another contract for two months. Currently, no players are subject to this restriction.
Poison Pill Provision (PPP):
For players still on their rookie deals before an extension kicks in, their fourth-year salary is counted as outgoing money, while the incoming salary is an average of the last year of their rookie contract and the extension. For example, Moses Moody’s outgoing salary for the Golden State Warriors would be $5.8 million, but for an acquiring team, he would count as $10.2 million in salary.
No Trade Clause (NTC):
The only players with a “true” No Trade Clause (NTC) are Bradley Beal of the Phoenix Suns and LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers. Both players were eligible for this clause because they’ve played at least eight seasons in the NBA and four seasons with their current team. Beal’s no-trade clause carried over to his trade to Phoenix.
Declined Rookie Scale Option (DRSO):
A player who has their third or fourth-year team option declined is still eligible to be traded. However, if a player like the Los Angeles Lakers’ Jalen Hood-Schifino is traded, their new team can only sign them to a starting salary of $4 million in July.
