Kawhi Leonard is making progress in his recovery from a right knee injury, but there’s still no clear timeline for when he’ll make his NBA season debut.
The Clippers star participated in two non-contact practices last week, and while coach Tyronn Lue stated that Leonard has “progressed very well,” he remained tight-lipped about when the forward might return to action.
Leonard could potentially accompany the team on their upcoming two-game road trip, but his return to the court will depend on how his knee responds to further work.
Teammate James Harden, who’s been waiting for Leonard to join him on the floor, expressed patience and optimism.
“I think we’re going to be more excited to have him for a full practice,” Harden told Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times. “We don’t really have contact practice, but when we do, just contact practice and then games. So, he’s inching his way back towards the court and taking his time. Whenever he’s ready, we’re ready for him.”
The Clippers have been holding the fort without Leonard, relying on their other stars to keep the team competitive, but Leonard’s return could be a game-changer. When healthy, his elite two-way ability has made him one of the league’s most feared players.
Lue and the Clippers are likely being cautious with his rehabilitation, ensuring that Leonard’s return is sustainable for the long haul.
As for the timeline, the message from the team seems clear: Leonard will return when he’s truly ready, and they’re willing to wait for his full recovery.
