Thunder Enter Trade Season With Options, Financial Flexibility

The Oklahoma City Thunder’s roster is already stacked with young NBA talent, but they still have an intriguing decision to make. Namely, who will claim that final spot?Kenrich Williams, Thunder, NBA

Ajay Mitchell is making a strong case. With the possibility of converting his two-way contract into a standard deal for up to three seasons, Mitchell has the flexibility to develop with the team long-term.

It’s a no-brainer for OKC if they want to add depth and keep a potential gem on their roster. But the Thunder won’t be short on decisions beyond Mitchell, especially with one of the best defensive teams in the league already in place.

Another factor in this equation is Alex Caruso. The defensive dynamo, with his $9.9 million expiring contract, is eligible for a four-year, $81 million extension beginning Saturday.

With his defensive prowess and leadership, extending Caruso would solidify OKC’s position as a top contender in the West. No doubt, that’s a move the Thunder should seriously consider.

But if they don’t lock him up, Caruso’s name will likely appear in trade discussions — though that’s not something OKC should want to entertain right now.

Of course, the Thunder have other assets that could come into play as well. Players like Kenrich Williams and Ousmane Dieng both have solid trade value — Williams at $6.7 million through 2026, and Dieng at $5 million through 2026.

OKC could use these assets as part of a larger move to solidify the roster or add a key veteran piece for a playoff push.

Beyond the veterans, there’s also the long-term potential on the roster. Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, and Cason Wallace are all locked into controllable deals for the next few years, and players like Nikola Topic and Dillon Jones could develop into key rotation pieces down the line.

With a stash of draft capital — including a treasure trove of first-round picks — OKC has the flexibility to make big moves when the time is right. They also have 16 second-round picks they can use to sweeten any deal.

That financial flexibility is crucial. The Thunder are currently $9.5 million below the luxury tax, with an $8 million trade exception at their disposal.

Whether it’s solidifying their roster with Mitchell or making a bold move for a more experienced player, Oklahoma City is in a position of power. And with a future as bright as theirs, the Thunder are theoretically set to be an NBA force for years to come.
