In a bold move ahead of a potential NBA super-max extension, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has parted ways with his agents at Wasserman and will now represent himself in contract negotiations, per league insider Chris Haynes.
Gilgeous-Alexander, a two-time All-NBA selection and the 2024 MVP runner-up, is set to become eligible for a four-year, $293.4 million super-max extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder this July.
Despite having two years left on his current deal, the Thunder can extend him up to the six-year limit, with the new contract kicking in for the 2027-28 season.
Unlike the speculation surrounding Luka Doncic and his future in Dallas, there’s no indication that Oklahoma City won’t offer SGA the full super-max deal. The Thunder have built a championship-contending roster around their superstar, currently holding the league’s best record at 44-10.
Given his dominance this season — leading the NBA with 32.5 points per game on 52.3% shooting, along with 6.1 assists, 5.1 rebounds, 1.9 steals, and 1.0 block per game — it’s a no-brainer for OKC to lock him in long-term.
While Gilgeous-Alexander will negotiate his contract personally, he will continue working with Simon Gebrelul of Isla Management for off-court ventures, per Haynes. It’s a rare move for a player of his caliber, but with a straightforward deal likely on the table, SGA seems confident in his ability to handle business himself.
As the NBA MVP favorite, Gilgeous-Alexander’s decision to go solo in contract talks only reinforces what we already know — he’s betting on himself, and so far, it’s paying off in a big way.
