University of Michigan coach and former NBA power forward Juwan Howard has surfaced as a potential coaching candidate for the Lakers, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
The Lakers are parting ways with coach Frank Vogel after three seasons, a foregone conclusion that was likely determined weeks ago.
This won’t be the first time Howard has been mentioned as a possibility to coach the Lakers. His name was also mentioned in 2019, when he instead took the job at Michigan.
Howard was a teammate of Lakers GM Rob Pelinka at Michigan, as well as with Lakers star LeBron James with the Heat.
Howard served as an assistant with the Heat from 2013-19, before taking the Michigan job., He led the Wolverines to the Elite Eight in 2021, then to the Sweet Sixteen this past season.
Along with Howard, Jazz coach Quin Snyder, 76ers coach Doc Rivers and Raptors coach Nick Nurse have all been linked to the LA job, though none of those coaches are available and there’s not really a sense they will become so.
