Expansion talk is officially back on the calendar.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that the topic will be discussed when the league’s Board of Governors meets next month, as relayed by The Athletic’s Joe Vardon. Just don’t expect a vote. Not yet.
Silver said expansion will be a conversation point, not a decision point, with a final call expected sometime later this year after further study of the marketplace. He was also clear on one thing the league is not considering — relocating an existing franchise.
Seattle and Las Vegas remain the cities most often mentioned internally, but only as expansion candidates. No teams are moving.
Silver also noted there’s no predetermined number of teams that would be added if the league does expand. That, too, will depend on what the NBA uncovers during its evaluation.
In other words, the door is open. Just not unlocked yet.
