NBA commissioner Adam Silver probably likes a good trade rumor as much as the rest of us. At the very least, Silver is well aware that rumors and speculation help keep the league spinning on social media.
But Silver made it clear that he doesn’t think that is all the NBA media should cover and discuss. About that much, he is 100 percent right. It doesn’t need to be all drama, all the time.
Silver discussed that topic during an appearance on the Numbers on the Board podcast.
“I respect the job the media does, and it’s not a suggestion that people shouldn’t ask the tough questions or be critical, or talk about things they don’t like about the game,” Silver said. “But I would say … that sometimes they don’t spend enough time talking about why people love this game.”
Silver added that he recently had a conversation with legendary former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski.
“He said that we should educate people about the game and celebrate the game,” Silver added. “Educate and celebrate. I wish there were more of that.”
Again, Silver is correct. The media, by and large, is too reliant on clicks and ratings. Always has been. But the best outlets try to educate and celebrate the NBA, along with informing and yes, at times being critical. I hope we do all of that and more here at Hoops Wire. It’s always the goal, anyway.
