Adrian Wojnarowski Reflects On Life, Legacy After Cancer Diagnosis

Adrian Wojnarowski — “Woj” to NBA fans everywhere — dropped one of the biggest scoops of his career this year, but this time, it was personal.Adrian Wojnarowski, NBA, ESPN

In a heartfelt profile with Sports Illustrated, the former ESPN insider revealed he was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer in March, a few months before his surprise retirement.

For someone who built a legacy on breaking the biggest NBA news, Woj found himself at the center of a story he never wanted to tell. It started with a routine physical in February. Elevated PSA levels led to more tests, and eventually, a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis.

The timing was surreal: Woj got the call with the results just before going live on NBA Countdown. Classic Woj fashion — business first.

Fortunately, the prognosis is positive. Woj is symptom-free and now focused on quarterly checkups and lifestyle changes: healthier eating, better sleep, and more exercise. Doctors have assured him that the cancer was caught early, giving him a strong outlook moving forward.

A Farewell and a Fresh Start

Woj’s September retirement stunned the NBA world, but as he told SI’s Chris Mannix, the decision wasn’t about cancer. It was about finding balance.

“Time isn’t in endless supply,” Woj wrote in his goodbye message. And while the diagnosis put that in sharper focus, the real catalyst came in May, at the funeral of fellow ESPN insider Chris Mortensen. Mortensen’s passing was a reminder that life is about more than breaking news.

“It made me remember that the job isn’t everything,” Woj said. “In the end, it’s just going to be your family and close friends. Nobody remembers [breaking stories]. It’s just vapor.”

Woj, who famously traded sleep for scoops and ran on caffeine and adrenaline during the NBA’s wildest nights, stepped away from the chaos.

In its place, he’s found a new chapter: general manager of the men’s basketball team at St. Bonaventure, his alma mater. For Woj, it’s a return to his roots, far from the late-night texts from agents or endless injury updates.

Shams Takes the Baton

With Woj out, ESPN turned to another NBA newsbreaker familiar to fans: Shams Charania. It’s a full-circle moment for Shams, who cut his teeth under Woj at Yahoo Sports. And if there’s anyone who can fill those big shoes, it’s him.

Still, it’s hard to imagine the NBA landscape without Woj bombs lighting up Twitter. For years, Woj was the voice fans trusted during the league’s most chaotic moments. Now, he’s finding peace in a different kind of hustle, one that values life’s bigger picture.

The Woj Legacy

The news world moves fast, but Woj’s influence on NBA reporting is indelible. He didn’t just break stories — he redefined how fans consume the game. Yet, in his own words, breaking news is fleeting. Family, health, and the moments that truly matter? Those are forever.

Woj might no longer be the guy delivering the trade bombshells, but in stepping back, he’s delivered perhaps his most powerful message yet. Sometimes, the biggest win is knowing when to walk away.
