Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson aware Mavericks could move them

The Mavericks didn’t just fire their general manager. They might be preparing to flip the roster, too.

Per Ashish Mathur of Dallas Hoops Journal, both Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson understand there’s a strong chance they’ll be traded as Dallas reshapes its direction under Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi.

Davis and Thompson do not have no-trade clauses. Davis is making $54.1 million this season, while Thompson is at $16.7 million.

And the situation around both veterans is complicated.

Davis, a Chicago native, has appeared in only 14 games for the Mavericks since the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade with the Lakers last season.

He’s been productive when available — averaging 20.8 points, 10.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals — but availability remains the issue. He’s played in just five games this season, currently sidelined with a left calf strain and no clear return date.

Davis also reported to camp at 268 pounds, or 15 pounds heavier than his previous Lakers listing. He turns 33 in March.

Thompson has had his own struggles. The five-time All-Star is averaging a career-low 9.4 points on 33.8 percent shooting and was moved to the bench after seven games by coach Jason Kidd. He turns 36 in February.

The Mavericks sit at 4-11 and in 13th in the Western Conference.

Finley and Riccardi are believed to prefer a full reset, building around rookie Cooper Flagg, who is averaging 15.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists, and already looking like the organization’s long-term priority.

If Dallas does indeed pivot, expect Davis, Thompson and several other vets to be at the center of calls before February.
