Are the Cavs open to moving De’Andre Hunter?

When the Cavaliers acquired De’Andre Hunter ahead of last season’s trade deadline, the thinking was straightforward. Add a reliable two-way wing. Strengthen the bench. Make a real push.

It did not play out that way.

The Cavs fell short in the second round against Indiana, and this season has not unfolded quite as expected either. Hunter was brought in to be a three-and-D presence, but this has been his toughest shooting year, and the fit has been uneven at times.

That has led to some noise.

Matt Moore of Hardwood Paroxysm reported that there is “a lot of smoke” around the idea that Hunter, or at least his representation, would prefer a change of scenery. Moore stopped short of calling it a demand, and that distinction matters.

From the Cavs’ side, there is no indication they are actively shopping Hunter. Team-level signals continue to suggest Cleveland wants to see this group together and healthy before making any major decisions.

That stance is also shaped by reality. The Cavs are the league’s lone team operating above the second apron, a position that severely limits flexibility and makes almost any trade difficult to execute.

That does not mean impossible. This is still the NBA. Where there is motivation, there is often a workaround. But it does mean the Cavs cannot move quickly or casually, even if they wanted to.

Hunter spent his first five seasons in Atlanta and was once viewed as a core piece there. That chapter ended quietly. This one may still have room to breathe.

It is fair to say Hunter has not been at his best. It is also fair to say context matters. Injuries, role fluctuation and expectations have all played a part.

Rumors come with the territory. The cap adds another layer. How the Cavs navigate both will tell the real story.
