East Notes: Bucks, Gary Trent Jr, Raptors, Cavs

Bucks

The Bucks are among those who could have an interest in veteran free agent wing Gary Trent Jr., per Shams Charania of The Athletic. Trent is among the top players left on the market. He won’t be returning to Toronto.Gary Trent Jr, NBA, Raptors, Bucks

“Trent, the 25-year-old who averaged 13.7 points on 39.3 percent 3-point shooting for Toronto last season, is taking a patient approach to find the best opportunity for his seventh NBA campaign,” Charania wrote.

  • Along with pursuing Trent, the Bucks are expected to conduct a workout of veteran players in Las Vegas at summer league this week. Wing Will Barton is among those who will audition. All of this is per Charania.

Raptors

Newcomer Davion Mitchell could prove to be the perfect backup point guard for the Raptors, wrote Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun. Mitchell was acquired in an offseason trade with the Kings.

“The Raptors had kept tabs on Mitchell heading into his draft year (the team went into the lottery that year in seventh and moved up to grab Scottie Barnes fourth overall) and obviously have seen enough since to take a chance,” Wolstat wrote.

  • Toronto has been quiet in free agency because it wants to gauge where it is “in the building process” with the current roster, per Doug Smith of the Toronto Star. “To bring in, say, some veteran likely wouldn’t make a huge difference and might actually be counterproductive to what they want to accomplish,’ Smith wrote. “There just didn’t seem to be a logical add.”

Cavaliers

  • In case you missed it, point guard Darius Garland said he has no desire to be traded, despite all the reports to the contrary. He called those reports “just rumors.” We have the full story here.
  • The Cavs are among those who have been linked to supposedly available Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram, but they aren’t willing to give him a $210 million extension, a league source told Hoops Wire. It seems as if the trade market for Ingram is drying up quickly.
  • Cleveland is more likely to stand pat and make some smaller changes around the edges ahead of training camp. Big men Tristan Thompson, Damian Jones and Marcus Morris aren’t expected to be brought back. Same may be true of Isaiah Mobley.
  • So the Cavs will undoubtedly be adding new faces to the frontcourt. They’re also in the market for a veteran backup point guard. Another wing also could be in the works, depending on what happens with restricted free agents Isaac Okoro and the development of Emoni Bates and rookie Jaylon Tyson.
