The news could have been worse. Much worse.
Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo has been diagnosed with a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise and will be reevaluated in one week, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
No structural damage. That was the key takeaway.
“The good news was it was a really good image, so there was no damage,” Bucks coach Doc Rivers said, via Eric Nehm of The Athletic. “Nothing. It was really just good news. But I don’t know the next part.”
That “next part” is everything for Milwaukee.
Antetokounmpo suffered the injury Sunday against Indiana, landing awkwardly after a spin move and dunk.
He briefly stayed in before exiting for good. At the time, it didn’t seem overly serious. A couple days later, the tone shifted.
Now comes the wait.
Giannis has already appeared in just 36 games this season, dealing with knee, groin and calf issues along the way. When he’s been on the floor, he’s produced as usual. Nearly 28 points, almost 10 rebounds, more than five assists.
But availability has been the issue. And it may define the Bucks’ season.
Milwaukee sits 11th in the East at 28-39, five and a half games out of the final play-in spot. The margin is thin. The schedule doesn’t ease up, either, with a road trip looming.
The Bucks also ruled out Myles Turner on Tuesday with a calf injury.
So yes, the imaging brought relief.
But the standings don’t care about good news.
