The Bulls and Clippers are among the teams interested in veteran free agent forward Paul Millsap, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Per previous reports, Millsap has also been drawing interest from the Nets and Warriors. Charania seconded those reports.
Millsap, 36, is a 6-foot-7 power forward who played a vital role for the Nuggets over the past four seasons, including a run to the Western Conference finals in 2020. He is now an unrestricted free agent.
He averaged just 9.0 points and a career-low 4.7 rebounds last season, and is probably at the stage of his career where he is best suited to come off the bench. Theoretically, he could add a boost in reserve to a contender.
Per Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, the Hawks, Pelicans, 76ers and Timberwolves are all also interested in Millsap, but he hasn’t been close to signing. That may remain the case until well after the season begins.
“I think (Millsap is) gonna be a minimum or a midseason guy,” one source told Fischer. “What’s the rush? The money wouldn’t get much better, and he can just pick his team. What if New Orleans is really good come January? What happens when some guy gets hurt, and that team starts scrambling for a replacement? He can pick his spot.”
Fischer’s source makes a valid point. Millsap is most likely to want to join a contender and help a team make a run at a championship. If that’s the thinking, he can undoubtedly afford to wait.
