Former Lakers guard and longtime NBA coach Byron Scott offered a heartfelt tribute to Elden Campbell, who died Tuesday at age 57.

Scott, a key piece of the Showtime Lakers before sharing a locker room with Campbell in the early 1990s, said the big man’s calm presence and steady personality made him impossible not to like.

“I just remember his demeanor. That’s why we nicknamed him ‘Easy E,’” Scott told the Los Angeles Times. “He was just so cool, nothing speeding him up. He was going to take his time. He was just easy. He was such a good dude. I loved Easy, man.”

Campbell spent nearly nine seasons with the Lakers after being drafted in 1990, later winning a championship with the Pistons in 2004.

Scott’s comments captured what many around the league felt about Campbell — a gentle personality wrapped inside a 6-foot-11 frame, and a teammate who made demanding NBA seasons feel a little lighter.

Campbell’s cause of death was not disclosed.
