The Cavaliers are kind of stuck in the middle and that’s the worst place to be. We also know that they have yet to live up to some lofty expectations.
Injuries haven’t helped, sure. But there is something more to it than just that. At least, that’s the way it seems at the midway point of the season.
The February 5 trade deadline is now less than a month away. Do the Cavs need to make a deal? Can they even pull one off if they wanted to — given their massive salary-cap restraints?
I discuss all that and more on the latest Hoops Wire Live from 330 to Go. You can watch it here on YouTube or simply by clicking the player below.
As always, I welcome your thoughts in the comment section. While I don’t always have time to type out a response, I do read every last one.

Sam, you need another person doing the show with you. I’ll volunteer to come on as a fan. Have different people each week. The cavs need to make a move and giannis is that guy. Yet, the 2nd Apron is preventing us from getting him. I’m confident Mobley for giannis would be acceptable to Milwaukee and I would add more if I had too. The real issue is how to get under the 2nd Apron right now to make that deal happen. Donovan and giannis for the next 3 years puts us in contention. We need to drop 22 million to be under 2nd Apron. Allen is the guy most likely. I think there are teams that want him. Can anyone take on his salary for a draft pick that gets us below the 2nd Apron? If we can do that then we can maneuver for giannis.
Brett, my priority right now is actually to find a way to put you in charge. Senior VP of basketball operations. Koby Altman would report to you! Seriously, though, love the idea. I agree it’d be a noticeable upgrade.
I’m an Atkinson fan. I am not a fan of the way we’re playing right now.
I wasn’t an Altman fan in the past. Last year I thought he was winning me over. But that feeling has faded recently.
I am not excited about the way we’re using Mobley. I think his strengths compliment other spots and roles on the floor, and the idea of who he plays next to, that importance has been underestimated.
We have some talented pieces overall. Do any of them compliment each other? There is moderate chemistry between our talent. We look less like a united force and more like a bunch of talented players taking turns. I watch Mobley dribble the air out of the ball and the wind and power out himself before he even GETS to the paint. I haven’t seen a catch and shoot baseline 10 footer in the longest. Here’s a guy who should be getting some of the easiest buckets in the league, some of the highest percentage shots, through a team approach. Instead he’s going one on one from the half court line until he runs out of options and gives it up or misses.
It feels like we are trying to develop skills guys should work on in the summer.. instead of trying to go with out best options to win the game today. It’s playing for the future, at the cost of today.
I would like us to value today, a bit more. If we’re truly competing.. Mobley is not our transition ball handler. Not at this point in his career. He barely has the strength to hang with opponents bigs for 40 minutes. Can we use his energy in a wiser way?
Mitchell needs reconsideration as a number 1 option. I don’t know if he knows any other way. He’s a great show, and if that’s what the Cavs want to be about, that’s okay. That’s basketball too. But if we’re truly trying to win at the highest level, running through him, as much as we do, it’s just not going to happen. We need to prioritize acquiring another go-to player, to give him an option better than himself. He will need to learn to trust. Right now, it’s not looking good, the trajectory.
