Former Cavs assistant Dan Geriot named head coach at Iona

Former Cavaliers assistant coach and current Pelicans assistant Dan Geriot has been named the new head coach of the men’s basketball team at Iona University, the school announced in a press release.Dan Geriot, Cavaliers, Cavs, Pelicans, NBA, Iona

Geriot, 36, takes over the program after Tobin Anderson was dismissed on Monday following two seasons at the helm. CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander reported earlier this week that Geriot was set to replace Anderson.

“I am grateful for this opportunity and excited to get to work,” Geriot said in a statement. “Iona has a strong basketball tradition and history of success, and I look forward to being part of it. Our goal is to build a team that plays hard, competes at the highest level, and makes our fans proud. I can’t wait to get started.”

Before transitioning to coaching, Geriot played four seasons of college basketball at Richmond and spent one season as a professional in Belgium. His coaching career began as an assistant at Princeton and Campbell University before joining the Cavaliers in 2015.

During his nine years with the Cavs, Geriot worked his way up to an assistant role under then-head coach J.B. Bickerstaff. He also served as head coach of the G League’s Charge.

After Bickerstaff was fired last summer, Geriot moved to New Orleans, joining Willie Green’s staff as a front-bench assistant.

Geriot is the third NBA assistant to secure a college head coaching position this month, following Alex Jensen (Utah) and Luke Loucks (Florida State). Both Jensen and Loucks also played college basketball, with Jensen and Loucks returning to their alma mater.
