Somehow, Diamond Sports has managed to live to see another day, and the Cavaliers and 12 other teams will have their games again carried by Bally Sports.
For the record, Diamond Sports is moving through bankruptcy proceedings, though it remains the largest regional sports network in the country. While Bally will still carry games for 13 NBA teams, others have departed, opting to broadcast their games for free.
That list consists of the Phoenix Suns, Utah Jazz, New Orleans Pelicans and Portland Trail Blazers. The Cavaliers and others very well could join that group after the upcoming season.
Along with the Cavs, Bally will continue to be the home of the following: Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs.
“But, although the announcement exuded optimism, the financial viability of Diamond beyond 2025 remains open-ended,” Sports Business Journal wrote. “Filings on Friday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas simultaneously revealed that Diamond — in an effort to limit costs — has cut ties with the Mavericks, who sources said will either become the fifth NBA team to broadcast games over the air or possibly join a burgeoning Texas Rangers venture to create a new Southwest-based RSN.”
The re-upping of Diamond Sports and the NBA requires the approval of a federal bankruptcy judge — with the next hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas set for Sept. 3.
