Let’s not kid anyone — I’m on the back nine of my career. My days attending Cavaliers practices and games and covering the entire NBA out of Cleveland … well, it’s coming to an end.
At some point, and perhaps soon, I will just sit down at my laptop each day, type up a column like this with no real substance, maybe aggregate a few hoops-related posts, and write whatever I want, without being present at any NBA events.
That day may be near, but it could be far off, too. I haven’t really decided.
Maybe that’s why I seem to be more excited each year about media day, training camp, the preseason and the real thing as it inches closer. And believe me, man, I am excited.
August is a tough month for me career-wise. Has been ever since I started covering the NBA full-time back in 2007. Everyone is excited about football, and that includes me. But when your entire career is based on a 24/7 basketball website, such as the one I run, then not having basketball can be tough.
People ask me all the time if I get time off when the NBA is slow. The answer is no. We go year-round. This summer marked my first vacation in three years. It lasted three days.
Granted, we aren’t posting stuff on the site around the clock. Far from it. But the site is always on my mind, as I check our daily numbers, see what’s been posted by our other writers and try to find ways to make it more enjoyable … for you. After all, you’re the entire reason I get to do this, the entire reason it’s been a success.
I know. You’re probably thinking, “Hey, Amico. What on earth is the point of all this?”
Well, sorry, but there isn’t one, I guess. It’s just that fall is in the air, most NBA training camps are set to open in two weeks, three days (the Cavaliers will be in Florida), and I’m again feeling rejuvenated.
I don’t know how much longer I’ll go, but I can say this much — the fact all those feelings have returned makes me certain I will be lacing them up again this year. Thanks, as always, for following along. You’re the best teammate a man could have.
