The Cavaliers have named Eli Kell-Abrams the new head coach of their G League affiliate, the Cleveland Charge, the team announced in a press release. Earlier reporting from HoopsHype indicated Kell-Abrams was expected to land the job.

“We are very excited to have Eli join our Charge family and the long list of talented, hard-working coaches we have had here,” Charge general manager Liron Fanan said in the statement. “Eli has an infectious personality, great NBA experience and a really sharp basketball mind that will be an excellent combination to lead our team this upcoming season.”

Kell-Abrams spent the past two years as the head video coordinator for the Trail Blazers, providing back-of-bench support during games. His duties in Portland also included on-court player development, game-planning and opponent scouting. Before joining the Blazers, he worked for the Sixers and Heat in various staff roles.

He takes over for Chris Darnell, who coached the Charge last season before leaving to join Doug Christie’s new staff in Sacramento.

As relayed by the Cavaliers, Darnell became the seventh consecutive Charge head coach to move on to an NBA assistant job, following in the footsteps of names like Jordi Fernandez, who coached Cleveland’s G League affiliate from 2014-16 and is now the head coach of the Nets.

By the way, the Charge recently rebranded with new logos, which you can see directly below.
