The Cavaliers still have nine games to go before the postseason but it’s sometimes easy to wonder if they realize that. Actually, they are well aware and have won three straight entering Friday’s road game against the Pistons.
But for the most part, it appears as if they just want the real thing to begin. The same goes for the fans, who have been talking about the playoffs (and holding on to the No. 1 seed in the East) for at least several weeks — if not months. I discuss why all of that may be, and much more, on the latest Hoops Wire Live from 330 to Go. Watch here or directly below.
As I said on the show, Thursday’s home win over the San Antonio Spurs was a prime example of the Cavaliers in March. Namely, they did just enough to win, turning it on in the final two minutes.
Actually, it was more like the final one minute — as in how long it took Darius Garland to score five points. That extended a three-point lead to seven and shut the door on the Spurs’ upset bid.
The Cavaliers (54-19) can officially secure the No. 1 spot in the Eastern Conference within a week or so, depending on what the Boston Celtics do. The reigning champs have been on a roll lately, but we can expect them to start resting guys here soon.
For the record, I’d be stunned if the Cavs don’t enter the playoffs with the top seed in the East. It would take the type of meltdown that we haven’t seen from this squad. While they may not always play super well these days, they generally play well enough to win — or at least win enough.
They just need the week off between the end of the regular season and the postseason. It’s almost here. And I get the sense the organization, and its fans, cannot wait.
