Cavs Talk: Summer Run, Isaac Okoro, Lack Of Changes, More To Come

What’s new with your Cleveland Cavaliers? Well, yeah, not a whole lot. The summer team sure hasn’t been good. But there are some things to monitor.

I discussed all that and a whole lot more in the latest Hoops Wire Live show from 330 to Go. Check it out on YouTube right here or directly below.

When it comes to the Cavs, as I said on the show, I’m fine with no changes at the moment. For one, some are coming. They will need to fill out the bench, for starters. The other “big” move will be figuring out what to do with Isaac Okoro, a restricted free agent.

I don’t see much to get excited about with the squad at the Las Vegas Summer League. I still have high hopes for Emoni Bates, but as I said in the video, those hopes are dwindling a bit. He needs to be more than a 6-foot-9 chucker. That’s especially the case since too many of his perimeter shots aren’t dropping.

That said, it’s much too soon for the Cavaliers to give up on Bates. He’s still incredibly young (20) and still has a really nice upside. Maybe new coach Kenny Atkinson can tap into it.

As for rookie first-round pick Jaylon Tyson, I think we will need to see a lot more. The Cavs can afford to be patient Watching Tyson at summer league, I think the Cavs will have to do exactly that. Tyson has shown flashes, but I don’t think he’s NBA-ready.

Meanwhile, Craig Porter Jr. has looked like the same steady point guard who is capable of erupting. It still wouldn’t hurt for the Cavs to find a veteran backup for Darius Garland. I suspect they know that. Given all the injuries and medical staff decisions, it never hurts to go three deep at every position.

So, check on the show and let me know your thoughts. There will still be more to come from your Cavs. Just know at least that much.

  1. Sam I believe Okoro will be a base year compensation player which means Cavs could only take back 50% of Okoro’s outgoing salary. Makes s&t pretty difficult.
